Winter Art: Handprint Snowman Ornaments

This will be a very brief post, as I’m about to head out of town to spend Christmas with my family! I wanted to take a minute to post a picture of our parent gift this year. It was a bit of a labor-intensive project, but they turned out so cute!

As for the process, we used basic salt dough to form round bases and pressed the toddler’s hands into them. This was probably the most difficult part- anyone who has tried to get a good hand print from a one year old knows how wiggly they can be! We also have a few little ones who are sensitive to different textures, which made it even more of a challenge. Some hand prints had to be done more than once, but we eventually got all twelve of them! We carved the initials onto the ornaments to keep track of who each one belonged to. We also used a straw to punch out a hole for the string.

For color, we used different shades of acrylic paint. We trying tempera, but the dough absorbed most of it. Acrylic is recommended. We used a paintbrush for the border around the print, and toothpicks for all of the little details. This was the part that took the most time- toothpicks aren’t the easiest tools to use, but they left the cleanest lines and we’re glad we used them.

We hope the parents will love them as much as we do!

Merry Christmas, everyone!
